My doctor has diagnose me with a bad case of anaemia.
I have been put on 200mg Ferrous Sulphate tablets once a day.

Know I know that the body takes time to absorb this kinda thing....so I wondered if there is anyone else out there on MF who has the same problem, and what they take to help the body absorb the iron faster/easier?

kitteh, i want a chance to saty something about this...prepare yourself for probable absolutely RATSHIT side effects...now!!the peoples of all countries suffer at one time or another from varying degrees especially you the wimminfolk with your monthly cycle...i'm no doctor but the granny cure we use is natural..it is based on various plants and stuff some of which are indigenous to the middle east..in the interests of your speedy return to balance ,no perifery...i can tell you immediately some of the things ,the rest i will have to try and find the english translations...1=creamed chick peas>2=burnt, yes burnt aubergine then skin it..if you have a relatively sharp bladed wooden kitchen utensil use it in a bashing movement to destroy the long what ?sinews? the stalk end is trash..when it cools a little salt and mayonnaise give it a fab taste,,>3=ckicken liver half grilled...fry an onion,put the two together and mash it together with a fork...but!! the real PINCH HITTER is a plant we know as hilbeh..it is also a destroyer of cholesterol and prevents various heart diseases..would you trust a jewish doctor? ours virtually overnight were presented with over a hundred thousand people,no anemia ,no cholesterol,western style heart diseases were something people read about...i was in swaddling clothes when that op went down,so you can see for how long the research has been going on...the village is still asleep but later in the morning i will research it ..off the cuff your avenues are ..possibly your pakistani moslem community,,i would try the north africans first,failing that the Sephardic jews=london...

Thank you very much for the great advice!
I await further word from you.
Luckily I like most of the ingredients you have mentioned, although I am not sure what Hilbeh is...I will see if I can find out.

Okay this is Hilbeh apparently....

Ingredients:

* 2 ts Fenugreek seeds
* 1/2 c -Cold water
* 2 Garlic cloves
* 3/4 c Chopped coriander leaves
* 1/2 ts Salt
* 2 ts Lemon juice
* 1 sm Hot chili (optional); seeded

Instructions:

Soak fenugreek seeds in cold water for 12 to 18 hours until a jelly-like coating is evident on seeds. Drain off water. Place fenugreek in blender jar with garlic and coriander and blend to a coarse puree adding salt lemon juice chili if used and enough cold water to draw ingredients over blades.

Now I need to find out what fenugreek seeds are! Laughing

way to go kitteh ..now!!one reference describes fenugreek as a seasonal plant and gives the word gargeranit it kind of droops on itself..it is clear from the additional word kitniot family that it is mentioned in the bible on a par with cottonseed or rapeseed..perhaps with your puter you could whiz through a few mid e cookbooks until you find the common greengrocer word in english..i know there is one ,so i am checking too

malepietro della | 6 November 2007 - 11:12am

get your act together babes simple yahoo..i typed in fenugreek>>>>enter and in a second it is all there...its apparently good also for breast feeding ,all you have to do is eat enough to make you sweat hahahahaahhah ...but take it seriously,especially after you have been taking the iron tablets for 3 days or so..i wish you a speedt NATURAL recovery...

I had it when I was 12/13 due to other health problems. The best thing to do is make sure you eat a lot of red meat, especially at that time of the month. I suggest you arrange your daily meals by how much iron you can absorb.

maleawang | 8 November 2007 - 3:03pm

the body absorbs iron better in the form of haem, so red meat would do the trick. (haem is actually a component of red blood cell that contains iron). because your anemia is of iron-deficiency type, and iron-deficiency anemia usually due to excessive blood loss (exesscive menstruation in your case?) and that problem is usually due to hormonal imbalance... pls keep your iron diet in check untill the underlying cause(s) is resolved. im just sharing with you what i know, no intention at all of giving clinical advice whatsoever Smile

i had it when i was pregnant. its probably because you are a vegetarian that you have it, you have to see you eat more iron, i took pills for it, maybe you can also start eating stuff where iron is in it + take pills, thats what i did and took even more vitamines then i was already taking

femaleKL | 11 November 2007 - 10:12am

All i know is that you should eat more cheese, sea food, eggs, fish, nuts and cherry, 'cause vitamin C and copper ( cheese and cherry for example) help to assimilate the iron.
And you should not eat spinach and rhubarb 'cause they have oxalic acid that impedes the iron assimilation. The same about tannin, that is in tea,coffee, cocoa, cola and wine, so you shouldn't drink them also. That's it.

just wait till you get so anemic you have to be hospitalized.. that's awesome. NOT. Ive suffered from chronic anemia since my early teens.. I have Crohns disease.. and all sorts of other hellish things and anemia is one of them. One time I had to have Iron given to me thru my IV, and my veins are so small and I suffer from cronic dehydration, so the iron infiltrated.. and the black colored iron/liquid stained my arm for over a month! Not a fun thing. I"ve had to take 4 iron tabs a day for years now.
