5 Ways to Stop Trolls

I recently read an article on ways businesses online deal with the undesirable members. The article is called "5 Ways To Stop Trolls From Killing The Internet." It is written for internet business owners and gives 5 ways to deal with unruly website members. Perhaps it could help the admin stop the fakes / spam / religion wars while generating income here.

http://www.cracked.com/article_16765_5-ways-stop-trolls-from-killing-internet.html

"You might not be aware of this, but there are a lot of dickheads on the Internet.

Since this phenomenon seems to get worse with the size of the crowd, it is theorized that we will reach a critical mass; an Asshole Apocalypse, if you will. That's when casual Internet users--and the corporations who want their business--will step in.

There are ways to solve this crisis, but I'm telling you now, you won't like some of them." (continues...)

What Mailfriends needs is about five bad-ass, take-no-prisoners, no nonsense super mods with the authorization to kick asses and take names. To be more literally precise, the authorization to delete members and edit all channels. These super mods would have to be chosen from different time zones so that at least one of them would be on the site at all times. If our resident trolls found their posts deleted and their new profile deleted almost instantly, they would eventually tire of making new profiles. Making a new profile may be relatively easy, but clicking "delete" with a mouse is even easier.

The only trouble with this is, this isn't a web 2.0 website. It's a stone.age site that was never upgraded in the first place. Besides we only have one f**ktard around here, and that's hasta la vista Laughing

most of the ideas in the article apply to all websites, not just web 2.0 and there are even more programs that assist with pest control now.

"hasta"? there is african spam, not to mention the many people who don't disagree civilly because there is zero consequence to misbehaving.

banning is unsuccessful. it exacerbates the situation. the person who is already flaming returns with an easy-to-make profile and uber flames the channel or they keep their profile and shift their problem into another channel.

they could add a special hater channel where people could hate then take a no tolerance approach to insulting people in other channels. yet the insults drive away people and business. fake profiles and flamers aren't profitable.

i like your idea kansas, in fact it's listed in the article as well. I think using multiple methods would drastically reduce problems in this site.

There are only two rules you actually need to know:

Rule 1: Don't respond.

Rule 2: See Rule 1.

3. deactivate.

no one comes online to be insulted or abused, nor should they be.

(i tried the first two, with a "mod"). best wishes and good luck to everyone else ♥

Well, the power to delete/deactivate is only reserved for a few. The other rules work for everyone, including moderators. Without an audience, trolls are powerless.

I had to check out TTR cos I never had before. Odd that..there are probably some mods & active members I've never "met"...or whose profiles I've even checked out. I'm lazy. Razz And now seems TTR is gone. I've lost my chance! Crying

(No, seriously, who was he? An old member new username???)
