Profiles
We are due to make some changes tomorrow which will affect all profiles where code has been added to customise the appearance. This is a necessary step in updating the security on the site. The code which has been added will break and no longer work resulting in the profiles returning to the previous appearance.
I am sure you all understand the necessity of updating our security and this is just the first step. We will be looking for ways to allow new code to be added by individuals to personalise their profiles in the future.
We would welcome comment on the features you would like to be able to add.

Any improved security measures are well worth the effort, thanks Sarah. ![]()

Good that security goes up but about the new features and customising profiles all anew again: .... yeah right. Who still believes that?

Hi Sarah,
A Security update is welcome. I mean no offense but do you really have a good
security related reason to disallow CSS styling on the profile pages ?
And are there any plans of re-allowing CSS styling in the near future ?
Regards,
osXecuter.

Hi osXecuter,
No offence taken, but yes we did have a situation that needed resolved and this fix was the way to do it.
I appreciate it's annoying and we were very sorry to have to make this decision.
We are now interested in moving forward and are interested to hear what features the community wants to be able to add to their individual profile pages. Any suggestions?

Could start by deleting obsolete profiles.
The fact that this is a discussion board based community makes it unique, that should be closely adhered to, as far as I'm concerned. It might be time to look into commercially available BB software like IP board.

BTW - There was a time we could search through the messages. It would be nice to have that back.

In response to some feedback I've received I would like to issue the following statement:
As you are all aware we have had to reduce the available functionality due to abuse by some members. We are extremely sorry about having to do this but, unfortunately, the members in question were using the site for their own purposes which are at odds with the aims and ethics of mailfriends.
We have come up with what we hope is an acceptable alternative. We will be accepting code submissions for the purpose of theming profiles from members, this code will be reviewed and then, if passed, be made available to all.
All code submitted must adhere to a bsd style license agreement:
http://www.opensource.org/licenses/bsd-license.php
It will take us some time to write up the technical guidelines for submission of code so please bear with us while we are working on this.
For those interested in developing code for profiles I have added our guidelines in a new topic:

It's done. Anyone affected might want to remove the old code from their profile.
